The U.S. men's national team defeated Guatemala 4-0 on goals by Carlos Castrillo (OG) 19', Tim Chandler 58' (asst DeAndre Yedlin), Clint Dempsey (PK) 72', and Chris Wondolowski 86' (Asst Gyasi Zardes, Clint Dempsey). The friendly match was a tune up for the Gold Cup which begins next week.
Germany and England played to a scoreless draw in regulation time. During the 2nd extra time period Germany was called for a holding foul in the penalty area and Fara Williams took the ensuing shot which won the game and secured England's third place position in the 2015 Women's World Cup. It was the first and only time in 20 meetings that the English women have defeated Germany.
Japan Edge England 2-1
Japan edged out England 2-1 after an own-goal by Laura Bassett in the 92nd minute of play. The match had been tied 1-1 after goals by Miyama for Japan and Williams for England, going into halftime. Japan will meet the USA in the Championship match, which is a reprise of the last World Cup, which went to penalty kicks before the U.S. women lost.
USA Shut Out Germany 2-Zip
The semi-final match was worthy of both teams, but only one controlled the pitch - the USA. In a solid performance by the defense and midfield for the U.S. side, Germany could not get close to the goal, literally. Every shot but one was off-frame and when the opportunity to score on a penalty kick arose for Germany, Celia Sasic missed wide left. Hope Solo had only one blocked shot.
The second half saw a continuation of the U.S. dominance, keeping Germany wide and forcing desperate shots that were far off the mark. When Alex Morgan was blocked in the penalty area and the U.S. sent Carli Lloyd up for the penalty kick, there was never any doubt. She fired it to the right while Nadine Angerer dove left. Abby Wambach came in late in the second half for Megan Rapinoe and the U.S. was able to get a lethal combination going when Kelley O'Hara nailed a cross for the second score. Germany could not respond.
The Germans appeared fatigued after having gone into two extra periods against France, but nothing should be taken away from the USA's performance in this match.
