SUPERLIGA

Monarchas Edge the Revolution 2-1
Philly Beats Guadalajara 1-0

September 1, 2010:  Miguel Sabah scored twice in the second half as 10-man Monarcas Morelia held off a furious late charge by New England to win the SuperLiga 2010 final at Gillette Stadium.

Sabah struck from the penalty spot after 65 minutes after Darrius Barnes brought down Luis Gabriel Rey in the penalty area. The Mexican international striker doubled Morelia's advantage by volleying home a spectacular second with a quarter of an hour to play, but Kevin Alston's first professional goal four minutes later set up a stirring finish. Sabah collected his second yellow card in stoppage time, but Morelia held off New England to become the third Mexican side to win the SuperLiga title in the tournament's four-year history.

The Philadelphia Union gave Mexican team Chivas de Guadalajara a fine welcome Wednesday night by winning the match 1-0 on a second half strike from Jack McInerney, the Union held on to carry the night and 3 points in the Superliga.

For the second game in a row, Justin Mapp played the rookie in the goal and McInerney was able to finish by scoring in the 49th minute.

Union goalkeeper Brad Knighton was the star of the match by making several saves in the second half to keep his team out in front.

U.S. Open Cup

Seattle Sounders Make it to Open Cup Final Again

Seattle Sounders FC booked a spot in the final of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over Chivas USA at Qwest Field.

Nate Jaqua scored in the 10th minute after a pass from Steve Zakuani, while Zakuani assisted on a Fredy Montero goal in the 58th minute to double the lead.

Chivas pulled a goal back through Jesus Padilla 10 minutes later, but Jaqua ensured that Seattle would return to the final of the competition when he bagged his second goal of the match in stoppage time.

Seattle beat D.C. United in the final of last season's tournament, and it looked like a rematch was in order after D.C. took a 1-0 lead over the Columbus Crew into the 89th minute of Wednesday's other semifinal.

Pablo Hernandez put United in front in the 13th minute, but Marc Burch helped the Crew level the match one minute from time when he redirected Andy Iro's shot past goalkeeper Bill Hamid and into his own net.

The game went into extra time, and Guillermo Barros Schelotto converted a penalty kick in the 98th minute to send Columbus through to the final.

Seattle will now defend its title at home against Columbus on Tuesday, October 5.
